Tooro Kingdom, located in southwestern Uganda, is often called the “Kingdom of the Mountains of the Moon.” Centered in Fort Portal, this kingdom boasts some of Uganda’s most stunning landscapes, including the majestic Rwenzori Mountains, scenic crater lakes, and lush tea plantations. Established in 1830, Tooro Kingdom holds a rich cultural heritage that reflects the history and pride of its people, the Batooro.
Leadership and Legacy: The Role of the Omukama
The Batooro are led by the Omukama, or King, with the current monarch being King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. King Oyo, one of the world’s youngest reigning monarchs, took the throne as a child and has since grown into a prominent figure in Uganda’s cultural scene. The Omukama’s role includes preserving the kingdom’s customs and promoting unity among his people while working alongside the Ugandan government and international partners.

Culture and Celebrations in Tooro Kingdom
The culture of Tooro Kingdom is brought to life through vibrant festivals, traditional dances, and captivating storytelling. One of the most significant events is the Empango, the coronation anniversary of the Omukama, celebrated with traditional music, dance, and rituals. During these events, the Batooro wear traditional attire, such as the “Ekiteteeyi” for women and the “Kanzu” for men, highlighting their pride in Tooro’s cultural identity.
